Things to See & Do in Lipari

Attractions, unique experiences and unmissable viewpoints

Lipari is not just about the sea: it is an island rich in thousand-year-old history, architecture, breathtaking views and activities for all tastes. From the Norman Castle to the Quattrocchi viewpoint, from scuba diving to local wine tastings, here is what to see and do in Lipari for a complete experience.

Attractions & Must-See Landmarks

1

The Castle of Lipari

The fortified citadel overlooking the port and the historic heart of the island. Inhabited since the Neolithic era, it houses the Cathedral of San Bartolomeo and the Aeolian Archaeological Museum, one of the most important in the Mediterranean. The Norman and Spanish walls offer spectacular views of both harbors.

Practical tip: Visit recommended early in the morning to avoid the summer heat. Museum admission: about 10 euros. Allow at least 2 hours for the full tour.

2

Aeolian Archaeological Museum

Housed inside the Castle, it holds artifacts from prehistory to the Roman era: Greek ceramics, theatrical masks, burial goods and the largest obsidian collection in the world. A 6,000-year journey through the history of the Aeolian Islands.

Practical tip: The museum is divided into several sections spread across different buildings. Ask for a map at the entrance so you do not miss any rooms.

3

Belvedere Quattrocchi

The most famous viewpoint in the Aeolian Islands. From here you can admire an unforgettable view of the Faraglioni sea stacks, Vulcano island and the open sea. The name "Quattrocchi" (Four Eyes) suggests you need at least four eyes to take in all the beauty.

Practical tip: Reachable by car or scooter in just a few minutes from Pianoconte. The sunset from here is spectacular — arrive early to get the best spot.

4

Marina Corta

The old port of Lipari, surrounded by restaurants, bars and the charming little church of Anime del Purgatorio. The perfect place for an evening stroll, a drink with a view or to catch a boat to the other islands. In summer it hosts events and concerts.

Practical tip: In the evening Marina Corta comes alive: it is the ultimate meeting point. Boat tours to nearby islands also depart from here.

5

The Pumice Quarries

In the Campobianco and Porticello area, the former pumice quarries create a unique lunar landscape: brilliant white mountains plunging into turquoise sea. A UNESCO site, the quarries are no longer active but the color contrast is unforgettable.

Practical tip: Bring comfortable shoes and plenty of water. The white pumice beach is one of the most photographed spots in the Aeolian Islands — perfect for an unforgettable swim.

6

Church of San Bartolomeo

The Norman cathedral inside the Castle, dedicated to the patron saint of the Aeolian Islands. The Baroque facade conceals a history-rich interior. The Feast of San Bartolomeo (August 24) is the most important event on the island, with processions and fireworks over the sea.

Practical tip: If you are on the island on August 24, the evening procession and fireworks are an unmissable experience. Book your accommodation well in advance for that period.

Suggested walking itinerary

A perfect itinerary for a morning: start at Marina Corta, climb up to the Castle and visit the Archaeological Museum (about 2 hours). Then head down to Corso Vittorio Emanuele for a coffee. In the afternoon, rent a scooter and head to the Belvedere Quattrocchi for the sunset — an experience you will never forget.
